Sleep and Sleep Disorders for the Mental Health Professional

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
 
This session will review sleep architecture and sleep hygiene.  The causes and potential harmful effects of disorderd sleep on physiological, psychological and cognitive function will be discussed with a particular perspective for the mental health professional.
 
Some of the types of disordered sleep discussed will include obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, circadian rhythm disorders and insomnia.  The function of both REM and non-REM sleep to normal physiological, cognitive and psychological function will be identified.  The particular importance of non-REM sleep stages on cognitive and memory processing, memory consolidation and learning will be discussed.  More detailed discussion of neuro-hormonal events particular to specific sleep stages will be discussed.  An overview of polysomnography (sleep study readings) will be included to allow the clinician to have a basic understanding of these reports and how they play a role in treatment planning. 
 
Pharmaceutical management and the use of mechanical devices including CPAP and dental appliances to improve sleep will be described as well as strategies for improving sleep compliance.  Other interventions, including behavioral and positional techniques will be described.  Methods of screening for sleep dysfunction in the clinical setting and guidelines for when to recommend additional evaluatoin will be covered.  Recommendations for inter-disciplinary collaboration (including pulmonary, behavioral medicine, dentistry and rehabilitation) with the individual with disordered sleep will be discussed.
